Thousand little machines (CROSSING THE DESERT)
Below you can read a text that was published in the last issue of A/traverso, 1981. Now Agit Press has published this book about the first punk magazine in the world. (Spanish translation below)
Crossing the desert (La traversata del deserto) is an article that was published in the last issue of A/traverso, in the winter 1981. It was about the end of future, the end of hope. It was about the perception of a Meta-Machine that was cancelling the possibility of human reason to govern the impending world.

The time of the aftermath has began. It presents itself as a desert of which we see no end.
The defeat of the movement for liberation is not the product (consequence) of repression. The revolutionary movement cannot be defeated by repression, but only by its own inability to understand the new forms of reality, the new scenarios of the imaginary. Repression comes later, when the movement is defeated. And we must look the defeat in the face, and then move on, without whimpering.
Fuck it: fuck the sermons of power as of its cruel revenge, as of its immoral realism. We have lived. We live. Men of power will never know the richness of life because, defendants of the existent and the probable, they cannot even admit the infinite possibilities of experience that exceeds what exists.
Two attitudes need to be swept away: that of those who resist, who defend the values of the past movement, the forms of life that have been rendered futile by the technological change. If we resist we will remain astonished in a world of metallic intelligences and electronic images.
A second attitude is that of those who accept the unacceptable with the elegant excuse of cynicism.
No resistance, no cynicism, but rebellion is the way.
Where the misery is most frightening, where life is most oppressed, and intelligence most flattened, right there a universe of possibilities is connecting, entirely alien to the categories of dialectical opposition and antagonism.
Capitalist restoration lays bare the unsustainability of the existing, the inexorable tendency towards catastrophe.
We must get rid of the dialectical perspective. We must think in terms of possibility and impossibility, we must concatenate the signs and forms of absurd knowledge and of unrealisable technologies, we must attempt the experimentation of other universes.
In the culture of the desert, there is no longer room for dialectical totalisation. Do we want to remain its last defenders? For us, the crisis
is over: the very concept of crisis is based on dialectical categories, on the dream of overcoming, and on its disappointments.
The condition of discernment (of criticism, of distinction) fails with the establishment of an imaginary of instantaneous configurations, of video-electronic configurations. The brief era of the Logos (and of politics) is engulfed in the culture of the desert. Do we wish to restore heretical reason?
The critical reason has come to an end – in the culture of the desert.
Let us leave our baggage behind and build another compass: the modern compass is no longer of use because north and south have shifted. The imaginary of the desert’s population is a imaginary of stupefaction: it is the age of fundamentalism and heroin.
In this hallucinated reality we cannot rehabilitate the values of discernment, nor reconstruct the conditions of critical reasoning.
The logic of alteration succeeds dialectical thinking. No longer critique, no longer sequentiality of signs in a time subdivided into discrete units. Instead, the immediacy of alteration, the artificial production of continuity. Within this imaginary, we need to navigate and break free from the traps and constraints of (hallucinatory) reality.
No longer a sequence of signs acquiring meaning in their dialectical connection. Instead, a succession of configurations. The concept
of transition no longer has any foundation: Capital is insurmountable, there will never be an overcoming of this universe. But why should we give a fuck? Why should we believe that our fate is tied to this humanity? The humanity that elects Reagan, and endures Brezhnev and cheers for Wojtyla, as far as we are concerned, can just as well disappear.
The dialectical notions of antagonism and transition have their root in the field of Politics. However, that well-cultivated field, where human will seemed to be capable of producing effects commensurate with intentions, has evidently come to an end.
The ‘victorious’ (so to speak) revolutions of the 1970s erupted in the most unpredictable locations and placed themselves outside of ‘revolutionary’ rationality, guided by unpredictable madness, rather than by a rational strategy. The proletarian revolution that has marched resolutely forward in the past decade has not triumphed anywhere for the simple reason that it has no intention of winning.
It does not intend to ‘realise’ itself, it does not intend to transform into a governance over the existing. There is no possibility of governing over the existing except to turn it into a desert.
And thus, here we are in the desert. With the compass of politics, we will never get out of it.
Militarisation, asymptotic total war, decerebralisation. In this way, the masters of human time have already emerged from the crisis.
We must now consider two temporal coordinates that Political Reason completely overlooks: the coordinate of the very long-term time of anthropology, the time in which gestures, forms of life, myths and rituals are layered.
Secondly, the coordination of the very short-term time of neurophysiology, where instant mutations occur that make it possible to see, perceive, think and organise reality in a different way. The time of biochemical alterations (drugs), neuroperceptive alterations (sound, image) and technological alterations (experimentation, invention, art).
Then we will seek a needle capable of pointing to a new north and a new south, a needle that will likely guide us in the direction where intentional mutations are moving.
